Kiddo,
You had a birthday. Our family has had several adventures, but it is not updated here.
You are reading reasonably well. Most 5 year old kids cannot spell "dinosaur".
Last week was the week your baby sister started walking. She has had strong legs since birth, but is just now getting balance down.
I love you, your math-mommy, and your math-sister.
Love,
Math-daddy

Mothers day eve 2013
Would you believe that it's mothers day eve? Was that fast or what?
So what should we do for mommy tomorrow?
Flowers seem like the worst gift to give a girl. They are the personification of something amazing and beautiful that is killed before it can be made complete. It could be fruit or seeds or something but when you pick it all it can become is dried flower petals.
I like honey. It is nectar. The gift of the flower to the bees. It gives life to the plant, the flower, instead of taking it away. It is quite sweet. Crystallized honey was the crown jewels of an empire once. That is a great branding strategy, right? I could see "crown jewels crystallized honey" built in the form of the famous crown jewels. That would be neat.
Many folks go out to dinner, or to a movie. It is to serve food, reduce housekeeping, and to entertain. We are foodies, but not movie folks. Our budget is constrained - we are attempting to live within our means - so we are not going out to eat or be entertained.
Giving things like jewelry or flowers, according to game theorists, is higher cost to the giver than the receiver, but appeals to women. Shoes. Hats. Accessories. Guys, on the other hand, prefer core items: tools. Functionality. Should I give things of the outside, but not the inside?
I could sprinkle the floors with the aforementioned dead flower petals, but then we would have to clean that up. Making a mess is not always the best gift.
Mathgirl, you like kites. You like airplanes. I don't think your mom is nearly the enthusiast that you are.
Dancing? Some girls like it. Do you like it? I think that you are not much into it because you feel like you are ungraceful. You look at other girls and compare your pretty, and always your bad economics puts you on the wrong side. Country dancing? Line dancing. We might have fun with that. It's for rednecks, and hard to get wrong. It is about community doing well, not anyone doing better or worse.
Some girls like furniture. It is accessories for the home. We have enough stuff in our house. We don't need more clutter. It might be good if we could take a month off and empty the whole thing out, and only put back the non-clutter. Good old days of being a medieval peasant. Fewer hours, less food, more disease, lack of rule of law. Not so good in many ways.
Your mom loves to travel. We travel locally, but she has a hippie genetic in you that makes her sometimes look to the horizon and want to travel to there. A winning strategy is to find somewhere fun that she has not been and to go there. We have been to most places around here, so that is pretty hard.
You were up late, so I am letting you sleep in where you are at. Everyone in the house is still sleeping. They were all up late with auntie-B, and her kiddos. Lots fun. Late night. Sleep in you sleepy head.

May the Fourth 2013
You are at your rehearsal. You have a performance tomorrow. Ballet.
Your daddy and sister are still a bit sick. Cough cough. *sigh*
So I'm sitting with your sister while your mom and you are out. Feeding her bananas cause she likes the sweet monocotyledon. She has Virgils root beer in a sippy cup. Loving that.
Eating the "brat" diet. Bananas, Rice, Applesauce and/or Toast. It is for folks who have too much enteric flow. Slows them down. Stabilizes stuff. Easy on the tummy. Ginger ale or root beer are also good. Mostly carbonated water with a little flavor, but easy on the tummy too. Fluids and solids.
So I am playing pixie hollow. I figure if I get our character some level it makes things better for you. More stuff etcetera. I went through email. I went through facebook. I went through news. Now I am winning imaginary points as a "sparrow-man" (aka male pixie) on Pixie Hollow. *sigh*
I was interviewed there by one of the other fairies. It used to be there was class divide between members and non-members. Pixie Diamonds helped that. Trippy stuff.
Gotta go. Love you so. You aught to know.

Extended Family - 28th of April 2013
Hey kiddo,
Your math-nephew, math-niece, math-auntie, and a friend have visited for two days. It was fun and good, but quite tiring. You had a great time, but were a bit of a spoilsport when Isaac (twice your age) was better at anything than you. There is room for growth there. We may have to re-zero our discipline around living well with others.
Mommy and Daddy had a date. You were babysit by two very godly young women. I hope that when you get bigger you are godly. You should be god-honoring, and now it is easy, but years down the road is harder. The road isn't easy. It hurts sometimes, and breaks and bends us. It would destroy us if not for grace. If not for grace.
I gotta go to bed - I am toasted toasted. I am so tired and sore. I hope to be able to work well tomorrow.

Hello Mathgirl,
You might be preferred to be called light-girl, the superhero you made up who flies and makes light come from her hands. Is there a Spiderman hero like her? You have been watching the cartoon Peter Parker for some time.
So Slashdot asked a question near and dear to my heart. How to teach visual programming to kiddos. You are a kiddo. (link to earlier post on Robots, Software and Hope) Here is the slashdot link. (link) The really valuable part is the comments, not the question itself.

the 8th of April, 2013
Good morning, kiddo. Happy Monday.
I think I'm being funny when I tell others "Happy Monday, if such a creature exists" because most folks consider Monday to be sad. When I wish them a good day I am trying to lift/lighten/elevate.
Your mathmommy went camping with the micro-mathbaby this weekend. We had a daddy-daughter weekend which means that you got a lot (lot lot) of playing in and I didn't get much studying in. Trying to figure out how to float and not sink. I want to be staged in case the fall is as tough as it is trending to be.
Mom is angry at the clutter in our house. We have a process based problem - too much stuff comes in, not enough goes out. Eventually we run out of places. I think we need large-scale decluttering, like 20%-50% of "stuff" gone. I love you but do you really need 20 pairs of shoes at 4 years old? The most pairs I have had in my adult life is 5. You have more toys now than I had summed over my entire childhood. Your math-grandmommy loves to send you boxes of stuff. Her place was a bit of a clutter-box and I think I know why. Not sure how to be respectful and still draw a healthy boundary there.
I love you kiddo.
You are working on learning respect. You don't know it so well, but how can you know it if it is not modeled and trained into you. I think that when you understand that language then you can interact with men, and understand the interactions of men with each other more effectively.
One of our friends was telling me how she became the world-expert in her field and the new management is urinating on that. They are not being evil, just dumb guys, but it is really piercing her heart. I want you to be a world-expert in something. I do not want new dumb guys to be able to urinate on it, and I do not want your heart to be hurt by them. Feminists are not made or born, they have daughters. I want you to be a world-class success. If you can work hard and be disciplined then you can be world-class great. Stay far far away from drugs - they will rob you of futures too wonderful to imagine. They will rob you of a full heart. They trade today for empty and dangerous tomorrows. Don't take those roads.
I love you kiddo, and I gotta go.
