July 2025

It has been a while since I wrote. I am very sorry for the gap. It is easy to get caught up in the urgency of immediate, and painful in cost to the important.

I could attempt to talk about what has happened since last I wrote, both events happen proportional to time, and because it has been a long time there is a large volume there.

It is four in the morning on a Thursday. I’ve been working all night. The house is quiet. I will find out after I have slept if my work was reasonable.

I will try and take some time this weekend, biggest of the Matt girls, to work on that project that we have cold Darmok and Jelad. I really believe that a full day should be sufficient to make meaningful progress there.

Second biggest of the math girls, my artistic one who loves Beads, I owe you a new bedroom. I will work along the path we have discussed to make progress there.

Third of the math girls, my treasured little creature. I owe you a tea party. You wanted to have one earlier today but I was working.

Smallest of the math girls, I don’t know what to give you as a gift. Your grandma says that you have a very well developed sense of humor, that you are an insightful little creature. I wish I could do something I’m gonna have to spend some time.

I love you all dearly. I couldn’t fight this fight if it were not for you. I would’ve been tired of it and willing to walk away long ago if my family didn’t need me to do this. I’m grateful for your existence, for God using you to call me to be my highest self.

God bless you, God keep you, God save you.

Heart attack, Jack (Q4 2023)

My brother, your uncle, Jack J. had a heart attack yesterday.  It isn't his first, or his second.  It knocked him down hard.  He was medivac-ed (how do you spell that) to a city 120 miles away.  He had to be resuscitated 3 times during transport.  His sone feels that it is really good that he is alive, and that he is stable and breathing on his own.

His daughter K was saying that if he died she might harm herself, she has no idea how to live on her own. His (amazing) wife was saying that they would be able to pay bills even with the older kids taking up jobs.  They need him alive.

I wish I could email "Oliver Anthony" and ask him to write a song about how when the old men get put six feet underground their families explode, disintegrate, and half of them are done in half a year.

And I think about life insurance in the presence of printing $6trillion in new bills, and the mega-inflation we are due.  And when folks ask if the treasury can print a trillion dollar bill it answers in the affirmative whether there are million or billion dollar bills.

This decade "buried" my mother and my sister.  I do not think it deserves any more of my siblings lives.

And my beautiful nano, you said "can you please stop talking about dying because it is making my tummy sick".  You are five and articulate and wonderful.  I love you dearly.

God keep us all.  God keep us all.

Summer 2022, Covid was a dumpster file or bad politics

Hey there kiddos.  Girlies. Big girls.

It has been quite a while since my last letter to you.  Nearly a year.  I think my last post was mid-october in 2021.

I made a video for you.  Unpacking the encoded documents should be hard, but maybe valuable.

Here it is:

  • https://www.slideshare.net/EngrStudent/advocating-effectively-for-women

It was part of a larger video.

If I were more experienced then I would have fixed the volume.  Those 2d-id's have encryption checksum instead of urls, some for technology not imagined yet.  Going from encrypted checksum to source document is hard, but should be more tractable when you are adults.  If I am alive and have enough brain left, then I can tell you (maybe) where to find versions of that.  I have had enough of my stuff taken and used without remuneration.

You can see on slide one that you are meaningful elements of my life, and from slide two that you are my favorite creatures.

A year after the fact, it has only 74 views (maybe a dozen of them from me).

I joined the navy immediately after high school, but my ptsd and aspergers, as well as the very unusual nature (very new age, very hippie) of my upbringing led me to leave it early.

I struggled through 15 jobs in 5 years in the middle of new mexico.  It was a terrible time.  Arbys, Dennys, Subway, Burger King.  Some brief stint at NMIMT in their auto-shop.  Hertz car rental, Checker Airport Taxis, "National Research Labs" that made pcb boards but only turned on safety equipment during active osha inspections that happened about twice a month.  Movie theater.  Live-in health care.  Then I moved to Phoenix and worked for Bulle.  I solved 5 deal-breaker problems, big things, for not enough money to even pay rent, had to split an apartment with Tod Landis.  He hired "manager team" who fired me.  Didn't help him, but man it hurt me.  Unique Home Designs, I stood up their internal pipeline for custom security doors, good increase in yield.  Faith Church Janitor.  SMCC.  ARC Flashlight.  I did good for Pete.  His wife didn't like me, and his accountant wanted to rob him so they convinced him to fire me.  That was hard.

I went to college then.  Home Depot during the summer.  Worked as a tutor/grader/assistant through college.  Spent a summer at Magique Golf (Heath and Sean, sons of Bill) setting up their IT and working through the yield in their production process.

Some of those photos are other entries on this blog.

Here is "no mans land": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pJCgeOAKXyg

My mothers life.  A little slice of that hell.  She got us kids across that no-mans land.  We all lived to 18, something my biological father swore we would not do.  Murderous pedo monster. It is a crime that she died before he did.

In the movie, Jean was the glue that held X-Men together, that brought in the lost wolverine.  It was an imperfect metaphor, but it was the best I could find.  You girls know about the inattentional video.

I'm running out of time to finish this letter.  I wish I could tell you that I love, you and how very meaningful you are to me.  I wish I could give you hugs and strength that last a lifetime and make your roads straight and your destinations worth having.

Feb 2019 again, but better late than never

Youngest mathbaby:
I love you.
I see your face, and who you makes me smile a smile of joy.
I identify with you.  That means that I see you as a part of me.  Because you are part of me, I'm okay with giving myself to you, to better you, to maximize the good you can get in life.
I want you to live.  There is a chorus of fools, ghosts from my past, that chant they want me dead.  I speak into you the words opposing what they say.  I deeply want you to have real life.  You have my blessing, my permission, my blessing, to be amazing and have a life worth having.
If you let me, I will give good.

Middlest mathbaby:
I love you.
I see your face, and who you are makes me smile when I see you.
I see the wild curly hair that you identify as yours, and I remember the wild curly hair that I, as a boy, hated as a kid.  It was a bane of my existence, but intrinsically me.  I see your pride, and delight and I am delighted, and comforted that it did someone any good instead of harm, and I delight in your delight.
I see your art, and your jumping and running, and your dancing, and fairy houses: your alien.  I love how alien you are, it is beautiful.  It is the scent of you, and though I couldn't possibly put a ruler to it, I have learned to deeply love it.
You look to me for a road to greatness, and to be as fun as you remember me to be.  It compels excellence, drives me to want to give you such things.  I need to be needed.  My meaningfulness, while limited by my comprehension, is architected in part by your perspective, and your vision.
I love to sit and play video games with you.  I like your brave, your fun.  I like how deeply you love your friends even when they are deeply flawed people.

Oldest.  Largest?  Little girls want to be big girls.  Grown girls detest being called big because they equate it with fat or ugly.  Your gender engineers chunks of its vocabulary so that it can't win, doesn't it.

Math old/big girl:
You were the first mathbaby.
I see you and see a thousand images of your face flash by, from the 4d ultrasound months before you were born to the moment of your birth to the grump of last week and your tweenage silliness.

.... to be continued...

Mid-October 2021 and midbrain graph cognitive structural stochastic resonances...

 Hey there mathgirls,

A genius I know (E) uses cleverly correlated white noise to stimulate traffic in corpus callosum.  I was thinking about this as I was trying to find my old favorite simplynoise.  I used to be able to tune up a color of noise for optimal cognitive stochastic resonance with particular songs.  The music of the 80's shows that music industry already knew then (at some level) that additive noise of the right color can crisp or blur sounds.

We are almost at the tech-level for me to be able to re-engineer mathematical language into Klingon, so that instead of being comprised of the names of old dead guys, it is what it means.  I think to do so would be to give humanity to own the future of all science.

I had the idea that one could encode the graph of that mathematics into the nature of the correlations of the white noise, and imprint it on the structure of the infantile brain.  Such a thing could make it easier to be a Boltzmann, or other once in a thousand-year genius.  Humanity needs more of those.

It is 2021, or so they say

It has  been a rough year.  There were good things, but the world got crazy.

I don't know how to post here anymore.  I need to re-read "she calls me daddy" and "letters from dad".  I need to find this "dad" person again.

End of March, 2020

Hello Math-girlies,

It has been a busy year.  The mind forgets, doesn't it.  If you wrote down all we did, it would be a year of good adventure.  Kelleys Island.  Dad's new Job.  New baby.  Kings Island.  Christmas.

I'm in the basement writing a letter because the world is nearly shutdown. There is a virus, "covid", a coronavirus SARS-2, that has been overwhelming medical resources of 1st world countries like Italy, and Spain.  It came from Wuhan China, a product of their "wet market" where they kill, cook, and eat near where the animals are stored.  Very unsanitary.  Only in the 3rd world can things like that still exist.

I have a new cough.  It's really weak, but its unlike coughs that I have had before: its really dry.  I worked from here all last week, and I don't get out much.  Allergies?  Flue?  or Covid?  Time will tell.  The dry cough has been around since Saturday the 21st of March 2020.  We will see how this goes.

We have started playing through "Storm Kings Thunder".  I want to tell you how to think of goblins with AC15 and your first level characters.  Neither hit so well. How do you stack the numbers so the individual goblins become a non-issue?  You don't know it but the same approach works for the college application process, the job application process, and other game-theoretic situations.

I have to get working.  Cognitive models, and optimal computing beckons, and it also pays our bills.

I love you dearly.  You are all four my favorite girlies.

End of May, 2019

You both went through cross-over.

Math-mini, you were the first girl to earn "arrow of light" for Pack 365.  We did it together, but you had to do a lot of the legwork.  In one year you earned both your Webelos and your Arrow of Light.  I am very proud of you.

Math-micro, you completed your tiger and you are now a wolf-cub.  You two worked very very hard.  I can't tell you how proud I am of you both.

First they gave the pins (mathmini) or belt-clips (mathmicro) that each scout in the pack had earned.  Some had earned few, you both had earned many.  We do a lot of activities.  Mom doesn't know how very much of a scout she is.

Afterwards, they had each den starting with the youngest (lions) and ending with the oldest (Webelos) cross over the bridge.

Before you crossed the bridge they painted your faces and said (I think):
- black stripes on the tiger trail mean happiness
- yellow on the chin is sunlight along the wolf trail
- red on the forhead is for bravery

These show you are ready to move along the trail of scouting.

Mathmini, you were the first girl ever to go through your pack.  You were the first Webelos girl.  You earned your Webelos and Arrow of Light in one year.  Words fail me when I try to say how very proud of you I am.

Mathmicro, you are a brave and friendly wolf-scout.  I am delighted in your character (don't tell folks but I am also delighted in some of your quirks) and I love your kind soul.

On the saturday afterwards, we went and put flags on the graves of veterans.  When someone has died, giving their life, so you can have a life of peace and freedom, then you have to say thank you, and take a moment.  There are thousands, tens of thousands, of graves of veterans there.  It took hours to put down all those flags, but there were Scouts BSA, Girl Scouts, American Heritage girls, and several other organizations with lots of folks to make the job a lot easier.

You said it right, mathmicro, when you said just thinking of it is scary and sad.  It is scary and sad.  It is a holy thing.  No person with a soul should disregard the high cost it took to get here.  Fools throw it away as worthless because they haven't taken the time to look at the value.

I am delighted with and deeply proud of my Scouts.  I love you girlies deeply.

I also love our math-nano.  Too young to be in scouting.  I don't have a picture to put here yet.

You are why I do so very much of what I do, because it is good for you, because you need it.

March 1, 2019

Girlies,

I accepted an offer of a new position at another company.  It is south by southeast of here.  It is a big, scary, change.  I'm afraid of change, but I also know there is no life with change.  There is no growth.  Things can get worse, yes, but the only way for things to be better is change.

I should have more time with you girls.  This should be a good thing.  We will see.

Feb 2019

Hello girlies.  Hello oldest, middlest, and littlest.  (whisper: hello peanut)

Biggest math girl, you were my first mathbaby.
Middlest math girl, you are an artist, and a force of nature.  I love your wonderful heart.
Littlest math girl, you are brave, and engaging.

I love you all.  I love you dearly.  You are my favorite people in the whole wide world.

I don't think you heard that.  You might think you did, but I don't think you did.
Classes that I have been in say that when I am self-controlling and think to myself "I'm being a good example", I am in fact kidding myself, because on the outside you have no visibility to what happened.  Those classes say I should narrate, so you can get clues, and see what you are missing.

And now... I return to work. I wish to get the right kind of free time to build this in a suitable and properly noble enough way to be valuable and meaningfully empowering to you when you eventually get to read it.

I should narrate what "I love you means" when the thought traverses my heart.

-Mathdad.

January 2019

Hello girlies.  All three of you.  It is January.  My letters are less frequent, not more.  I don't like that.  My interactions, face-to-face with you are more, not less, and i do like that.  I don't like the zero-sumishness of that.

I love Liz Ryan.  She has a heart, a soul, and a humanity that make me feel valued.  Her approach is very pro-human.  It is the antonym of tyrannical, a more win-win and proactive.  I like it.

Here are some of her webpages:

So I would like to share some game theory with you girlies.  I read this article (link).  Here is the text of it:

Q. You are very quick to tell people to start job hunting. Sometimes you have to stay and fight.‬ ‪
A. In any other industrialized country I would agree with you, but in the US we have a curious thing called employment at will. You can be fired for any reason, or no reason at all.‬ So staying and fighting can mean getting fired and losing your income before you have a new job. Interestingly, launching a stealth job search and speaking your truth at work both require the same ability:‬ the ability to step through fear. It’s scary to launch a stealth job search, and scary to speak your truth to your boss. Whichever path you choose, you will grow muscles. There is no wrong answer. Do what your gut tells you to do.‬

I would like to tell you about "Game theory" which is better called "Decision Theory" and is the math of making good decisions.

Let's say your boss is a bit of a punk.  Let's say he is verbally denigrating, but not in such a way that there are recordables for HR.  Let's say that he takes things you initiated, things you and only you could make, things that you pushed into being - your children - and claims that they were his, and he alone should get rewarded for them.  (This is not my current boss, Jan 2019, just so you know.)  So you don't like that, and you want to be able to pay rent and buy food while not suffering these moral injustices, so you want to look for a job elsewhere.

Here is a single person, single action, decision matrix.  The rows are actions on your part.  The columns are fundamentally distinct ways the universe responds, they are what reality is. It isn't about the boss, but about whether a husband (or hub) should buy flowers for his wife (or sweetie) if he is unsure that it is his anniversary.  A guy might say getting it right is a win, missing it is a loss, but buying flowers on a non-anniversary is a slight loss, and not buying flowers on an anniversary is a wash.  Wins are +10.  Washes are 0.  Losses are -10's.  small losses can be -5.

+--------+------------+-------------------+---------+---------+
| | | Anniversary | Row Sum | |
+--------+------------+-------------------+ +---------+
| | | Today | Not Today | | |
+--------+------------+-------+-----------+---------+---------+
| Action | Buy flower | +10 | -5 | 5 | <-- -10="" 0="" code="" flowers="" no="" this="">

The row (action) with the highest sum is the one where you have the best result no matter the outcome.  A high tech big-brother weights the scores by their estimated probability of occurrence.  If you forget every day of the year, then the weight for getting flowers on the anniversary is 1/365 and the weight for buying flowers but today not being the anniversary is (365-1)/365.

So let's think about the boss.  If you do a normal job search, he can (and likely will) fire you for it.  If you do a stealth job search, then he is less likely to find out until you have a better place to go, and you can have a better work environment.  If you tough it out he might change, find another target/victim, or he might get worse.  Here is a plausible matrix.  If he suddenly becomes less of a jerk during the stealth search, there is no harm and no foul, though I would say leave, because he can just as suddenly change back.

+--------+----------------+----------------+---------+----------+
| | | Current | Row Sum | |
| | | Situation | | |
+--------+----------------+----------------+---------+----------+
| | | Better | Worse | | |
+--------+----------------+--------+-------+---------+----------+
| Action | Stick it out | +10 | -10 | 0 | |
+ +----------------+--------+-------+---------+----------+
| | Stealth Search | +10 | +10 | 20 | <-- code="" this="">

So people who rob, who have gotten away with it, are much more likely to do it again.  Recidivism rates for all types of crimes are something like 43% over 5 years; that is with prison time, not without.  Petty tyrants with no expectation of punishment do not stop, they only escalate.  This would give a probability weighting to the cells, substantially lowering the "better" column.

You might have different numbers.  Your stuff might look different.  You could get different results.  As long as the values that you place in the cells are realistic for you, and are the best you can get, then you can make better decisions.

Make good decisions, kiddos.  I love you.

Mid-November 2018

It has been some time since I wrote.  I should write monthly, not quarterly.  I am sorry.

One of the challenges is to find both energy and unimpeded opportunity in the presence of a host of competing urgent things.  You are the important, whether or not you are urgent.

I feel like, in the past week or so, my mind and heart have gone from being a single core processor to a dual (or quad) core operating at higher rate.  I am thinking better, and also feeling in color (without injections of testosterone).  I have been thinking about how Jordan Peterson engages the bible as myth, in the sense of epic and deeply meaningful symbolic, and started processing through the question "what are the myths that made me".  It feels like I am speaking the true name of myself, and each time I do it, I gain power and life.

Should I tell you about me?  Should I tell you about you?  I am doing something, intentionally, that Jordan said was a miracle some several thousand years ago: I am speaking to the future, trying to make a deal with the future.  This future, unlike his example with the farmer and the grain, is outside my lifetime, but in yours.  The question behind the question becomes, how can I give you a great gift that you can receive outside my lifetime, that you can realize?  It is a game of catch, but what to throw?

The myths that made me are terrible.  They are crushing.

My mother ran away from home as a pregnant teen in the early 1970's so that my grandfather could not drive/enforce her to abort me.  She started running then and has been running since.  I think it both made and broke her.  She ran from her ex, moving every 3 months for years and years, because he had promised to kill us all, so there was a dangerous and damaging several decades there.  For me I had to ask "did I destroy her life", "do I owe her a huge debt now".  It set up a reliance when I was young that became much more of a codependency as a teen.  It was healthy for me to move out of her home.  It was healthy for me to walk, and stumble, and struggle under my own sometimes heavy burdens without her as the context.  I have been, and will be, pro-life because it is too easy to put a crushing pressure on a teenage girl, to pressure her to abort the child.  I think that pro-choice folks would get a lot less aggressive opposition if they could make sure it is the girls choice, and not someone forcing her to do it, like they force her to do other stuff.  It feels like they have bought into their own binary narrative, when the world is more than "either-or".  There are cases where the availability of abortion on demand enables more, much more, oppression than it eliminates.

I asked my grandfather, when I was in 6th grade, if he did that, if he pressured her to abort me, and if he really wanted me dead.  He said his baby girl was in a scary and dangerous place, and he just wanted to help her.  I saw in his face, that in my asking the question, he looked in some reverential fear at that moment toward the holy ground that he had transgressed when my mom was pregnant with me.  He saw a piece of the terribleness, of the just consequences of his actions.  He wished she had a different trajectory in life, but he had taken a presumptuous hand, he had committed the sin of hubris against something great, in what he had done.

If I write here, in this public forum, one that is searched and analyzed by many robots, by many actors, some of my other myths, then I will set myself up for harm.  There are things that most folks simply cannot process.  They have no capacity for thought in the domain, and only a pre-programmed response, and I can see that response from here.  I would tell you some of the others, as I figure them out, but not the government(s), not the business entities (A,G), not the employers or potential employee analytics firms, have any right to know or use abuses that happened against me as a child as weapons against me or against you.  They can't help themselves.  I see the clusters and chains in how the algorithms candidate youtube videos, or feed posts at either facebook or linked in.  The humans view through the broken lens of the machinery.  That eye doesn't capably measure itself, so it can't self-diagnose, or self-improve.

Your lives are rich, and busy, and sometimes hard.  There is, thank God, so far, very little in the way of terrible.  The bears that mauled me, and your mom, you have not yet even seen them with your own eyes.  I like to think that is protection, but not over-protection.

I am going to have to re-read "Letters from Dad" and try this again.  I think that I have "departed from the way", though I didn't know it.  I sincerely hope to try again at this, and get it right.

I love you.  I delight in you.  I admire you.  You are the best of me.  You make me delight to work hard, and try and enable and empower you in life.  May you have a good and healthy life.  May God make you great, and make your life meaningful.  May your hearts be full of integrity, and may you do the best things.  You are blessings to me. Thank you.

Late august, 2018

I saw this and it was beautiful.
And I wish I had said it to you.

Here is the link (where will it be in 10 years)
https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/dear-daughter-leave-when-you-valued-sara-johnson/

Here is the woman who wrote it:
https://www.linkedin.com/in/sarajohnsonsj3/

Here is the content, lets see if this blog is around in 10 years.

I was encouraged to share this letter. Most of us know the feeling of rejection or not feeling valued. Unfortunately rejection and not being valued has no age requirement. I wrote this letter to my daughter when she was cut from her volleyball team. She was the hardest worker, dedicated to the off-season, and most passionate person I knew when it came to the love of volleyball.

The letter:

Dear Daughter,

Unfortunately, in life, there are times you will not be valued. Do not stay where you are not valued. Do not waste time in self-pity because someone did not value you. Your value, your worth, comes from your heart, not from someone else.

Today you were rejected by someone. Your heart felt broken, it was not. You even trusted the person who did not value you. They led you to believe they valued hard work, passion, off-season dedication, and attitude. They led you to believe these qualities were important to them when in fact to them they are not. Your heart hurts because you believed the words of someone who let you down. You are better leaving when you are not valued.

It is ok and normal to grieve when you close a chapter in your life and start another. Do not confuse self-pity for grief. Grief is part of celebrating what was joyful and good, grief is sadness to saying goodbye, grief is leaving to move onto the next journey. Self-pity is subjecting yourself to another person’s power. Self-pity is allowing imperfect people’s errors to consume your energy.
It is ok to grieve today and tomorrow to focus on what’s next. Take all your hard work, all your contributions, all your passion, all your heart, and put it to the next thing. Do not feel like everything you did for all those years was a waste. It was not. You are the amazing person you are because of your journey.

You will be able to recognize the next time you are not valued easier and when that happens (because it will), you will have the strength, experience, and self-worth to leave it. You might be in a friendship, a relationship, or a job where you are not valued. You will have the strength, experience, and self-worth to leave it. You can even grieve leaving, but you will know your value in your heart and you will take all that hard work, passion, energy, and attitude and apply it to your next journey.
You will not be valued by some people. People are imperfect. Leave those who do not value you. Grieve the closing of one chapter and then move onto the next journey.

Be proud of what you value. Be proud of your hard work, be proud of the attitude you displayed, be proud of the sportsmanship you demonstrated, be proud of the energy you expended and be proud of the skills you developed. You put yourself out there when others wouldn’t step into the arena. You gave your heart. It was hurt, not broken. Give your heart again to your next journey.
You will have the strength to leave when you are not valued again. You will grieve again. Your journey will be more amazing than the last because of it. It wasn’t for nothing. It was for the next thing.

I can’t wait to see you shine again in your next journey!

Love,
Mom

And now it is June (2018)

Girlies,

You are going to the Terracotta army exhibit today.  (link) I hope you enjoy it, are challenged by it, and such.

More wins:
  • Earn rating as "Expert" or "Master" in Chess.  (link)
  • Save a life: life-long quality; this means that life is more than a heartbeat, make a lifetime meaningful.
  • Build and race in the American Solar Challenge (or equivalent)
While it isn't "lifetime glory", it is more accessible, and can be a year-long glory to do some things.

Year/s long glory:
  •  Learn and be functional in a programming language (alice, scratch, python, r, ...)
  • Save a life: heartbeat; this means one person who would physically die doesn't.  (one year per life)
  • Save a life: year quality; this means that life is more than a heartbeat, make a year meaningful.
I want you to try.  Don't fall asleep.  Don't be imobilized by your idea of who you might be, or should be.  Don't be dead: be alive.

mid-june 2018

Hello girlies.

I had dreams/nightmares from Ready Player One last night.  I dreamed that someone in an avatar like Kali, and someone in an avatar like "Aech" were trying to destroy my world.  It was no fun. Looks don't make destruction any less painful.  I think that I'm thinking about yesterday.  Yesterday was hard, and I think it is dangerous to talk too much about it on a public forum because folks who don't take the time to understand, who want to cause some sort of harm, might manipulate my words badly, and use them against me later on.

Let's talk about something else.

Someone up-voted one of the better, harder, posts that I've made on parenting.stackexchange.com.
https://parenting.stackexchange.com/questions/22370/how-can-i-become-part-of-my-daughters-life-again/22381#22381 . I wanted to share it on the Parenting forum within Yammer at my work, but I'm afraid that when people find out about the excrement I have had to walk through in my life, they look at me like I'm covered in poop, and it compromises friendships and community.  I'm a survivor, not a victim, yet the culture isn't capable of looking at what I survived and thinking it tainted me.  I had no choice about going through it, I was a kid.  That is shame.

Can I share about some, what seem to be pretty good ideas?  Here you go:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=psN1DORYYV0
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iCvmsMzlF7o

When you finally read these, assuming they last, I don't know if youtube or the videos will be around.  I hope they will, but only God owns the future.

Biggest mathgirl.  I'm about to wake you up, kiss your cheek, and say happy birthday. I really should have woken you and middlest mathgirl up at like 6am on your respective birthdays and took you to breakfast.  I might try that this weekend.  I feel like I missed that this year.  We did it last year and you both loved it.  The littlest mathgirl is still just a few months old, and can't yet appreciate such things.

Littlest mathgirl, our little Valentina, you are getting big.  You smile and fuss, and you coo (that is what they call the making baby noises trying to figure out speech).  You are learning to articulate your hands, and control their positioning.  You support your bottle, and sometimes you push it out of your mouth mid-drink, and get angry at yourself.  You still sneeze a lot.  I installed a new activated carbon air filter.  I'm tempted to get a section installed in our AC that allows 3" filters instead of just 1" ones.

We sold the Phoenix house, and made nothing on it.  Paid 10 years, bought right before the 2008 crash, and have nothing to show for it except a deep sense of relief to not be there.  Never buy a home when you are "nesting".  Never let someone falsely tell you it is a "good investment".  If they use a period of time under the life of the loan you are going to have to get to argue about value, then they aren't being fair.  Salesfolks can skew the facts in order to make a profit.

I have to get to work.  They don't pay me to not work.  I'm trying to change the world for the better, but it is hard.

God keep you all three.  God bless you and God keep you.  May he bless your going in, and your coming out, and along the road you walk.  May he bless your rising up and your laying down.  May he bless you in evening, and night, and morning.  God bless you my loves, and God keep you.

late May 2018

Hey Girlies.  Greetings.
Salutations?

It is may and my last post was February.  It seems that I'm descending from one per month to one per quarter.  When I'm gone and you have only memories and these letters that might be sparse.  I could argue that I'm investing in the memories, but how much do you remember being 9, 5, and 4 months?

Do I tell you about the last 3 months, as a log of the stories of your life and how very much they have meant to me?  I could.

I can tell you about today, who you are, who I rejoice to see you as.  I could.

I could tell you about tomorrow.

Begin with the end in mind.  It is one of the 7 habits of highly effective people.

I have discovered that I have a list of things, for which I would be proud of you for the rest of your life.  There are trends in them, of hard work, commitment, excellence, being part of something bigger than yourself.

Here are some of the items:
  • Eagle scout - scouting is for boys and girls now.  I can't tell you how very much I want to teach you camping, fishing, and outdoors skills.  I don't know how to do that here, like I did in Arizona.
  • Run a marathon - like your mathmommy.  It puts you in the top 1% of fitness in the world.
  • Pilots license - be a pilot.
  • Blackbelt in a martial discipline
  • Engineering (or capable science) degree
  • Know the bible well, Love Jesus, and walk as a disciple of Jesus for your lifetime, and teach your kids to do the same.
  • Graduating high school any time between age .. now and age 14.  Making good stride that way.  I hope to start studying with you for SAT soon.  I figure that if we can get you into college then the folks who want to use "public" "education" to rob you of your minds, your nobility, and your excellence will be forced to shut up, to some degree.
  • Earning a college degree (including bachelor, associates, master, or PhD) before age 18.
  • Fields medal, nobel prize, or any significant technical award.
  • Being published in high caliber technical journal/s before age 18.  You can keep up after, if you like as well.
  •  Save/invest/earn enough to retire, then don't touch it until retirement age.
  • Being able to give your kids an inheritance such that some substantial part of it can also be given to their kids.  I am in debt enough that outside of education and character, I have no substance to give you, and I wish better for you and for your kids.
  • Become a master of something, or a "doctor"'.  I'm not saying medical, but I mean it in the ancient philosophical form: a profound healer and advancer of the field.  Be a master - head and shoulders better than the average person at something hard, something noble, something worth doing with your hands, something that takes hard work and results in a creation of tangible value.
There are also some things you can do that will cut me deeply for life.  I hope that neither you, nor your children, nor your grandchildren do them.

These are terrible things.  Devastating.  Never do them.
  • Never murder a child.  This includes abortion.  I am adopting, and right at half my friends have done the same.  Don't buy the political hate that says folks don't care after the child is born - I care deeply.  Just as I have cared deeply for you, I would care deeply for any child God puts in my care.
  • Never become addicted to drugs.  Meth.  Opiates.  Acid.  X.  None of it.  If you are a slave, I will not be able to respect you.  I will think of the profound brokenness of your auto Beta and I will be filled with both sorrow and disgust.  I get enraged, shaking angry, at the smell of marijuana.  There have been more than enough drunks in our bloodline to fill up the quota for all of time, do not do it.  Do not be owned by drugs.  Not by sugar, chocolate, or anything else.  Don't be owned - you are not property.  It devalues and destroys humanity.
  • Never be a prostitute or stripper.  Never.  My piece of human fecal matter of a male chromosome donor loves and solicits those professions.  Thousands of fathers have visited those instead of caring for their children.  They are an anathema.  You cannot love me and do that at the same time.  I can't not see it as hate.  Nothing in the world will destroy your capacity to receive love, or even detect it, like that - it will break you deeply.  It destroys families.
  • Don't marry a God-hater.  Don't marry someone like Chad Thibideau, who used the appearance of godliness to abuse his wife, and who caused profound harm to the church.  Wolves in sheep's clothing are predators, don't marry those.  Don't marry an anti-theist.  Don't marry someone who does not walk daily and deeply in the commands of Jesus.  You should know and live the commands, and you should not be surgically bonded in heart, soul, and life, to someone who does not have that.  It will deeply wound me, and it will deeply harm you and your kids.
  • Don't waste your amazing talent and potential to become nothing.  You are gold, do not become a reverse-Midas touch to yourself and turn the gold/treasure that who you are and what you can become is into a pile of manure.  The world will try to do that on its own, don't help it.  Don't let sloth turn you to nothing.
God keep you girlies.  I pray that the highest, noblest, kindest, power in the universe, the only one worth trusting, keeps you well, keeps you to the best of the best wisdom He has.  May God keep you from the darkness, and help you to live in and walk in the light.

I love you deeply.  I am proud of who you are, and who you are becoming.  God keep you.  God keep you.

late late late (end of Feb, 2018)

We had a great christmas.  It was sitting in drafts and is now published.  I didn't know it was, until I just looked.

We had a good January, enjoying snow.
We had a fun February.  We have a new kiddo, mathbaby #3.

And yet, they are not logged here.

I should try to re-read my books for you, and then start again writing all three of you letters.
Trying to not be a failure of a dad, or even a flake.

It is too small to be average.  If everyone did that, would the center move upward?

Late December 2017

Well girlies,

You are in the basement playing with your new (to you) Disney Infinity toys.  We bought them from  a mom who couldn't sell them to the video exchange store we love.  At $2.50 a figurine it was a great deal.

You had a good Christmas, and it has snowed, so you were able to sled for the first time since 2015 winter.  We spent a good part of the day going up an down a giant hill in an innertube we bought on clearance a few springs ago, and some borrowed sleds.  You were bundled in your thermies, clothes, snowpants, snowboots, winter coat, extra hats, and gloves.

Today was the first time we tried the self-heating hand warmers made by HotHands.  They were surprisingly effective with the ~10°F and wind.

Afterward we went to McBurger (what I call McDonalds) and you had happy meals.  There was a brother and little sister with an age gap like yours, and they were struggling to get along.  I told you that I was proud of how kind you are to each other.  I tell you that when you both are grown up, you are going to want a team.  You want a capable grown-up to be a friend and strong ally, like the force only different.  The cheapest it is ever going to be is to earn the trust and friendship of your sibling today.  They can be a great friend and great ally.

One of my deepest regrets is how badly I botched that with my siblings.  Even if we started today, there is never going to be a bridge starting from when they were young.  My sibs and I competed, instead of cooperating.  Someone had to win and someone else had to lose.  It looks like a zero sum game, but its really a negative sum game over time.  When I moved away, my family imploded.  Some parts are still there, the bomb doesn't make the brick and metal not exist, but the life-trajectories of J. or B. are not something we can go back in time and amend; the damage is extensive.  They never get a healthy childhood. Their personality and character breaks, strongly driven by crushing trauma, but then having layers and layers of choices and habits of thought and emotion layered upon them are a symphony of sorrow that only infinite hate could rejoice in.  This is one of the many reasons that I need Jesus.  He is truly the only one that can take something devastated, and do any good with it.  He did that with me.  He continues, for some amazing and unfathomable reason, to continue to do that.  Maybe someday he will do that for them.

Girlies, I want you to live with kindness.  It means something big in heaven.  It is one of the "fruit of the spirit", but really is one of the currencies of heaven.  In heaven, what we call gold they call pavement.  What they call gold is the only thing worth having.  The agrarian meaning of "fruit" is lost in translation to a technical civilization.  If you have the hand of God on you, doing to you and through you the things of heaven, that is a good thing.  It is a super-human thing.  Kindness can be a super-human thing. Patience can be more powerful than the whole world.

Wind-chills are going to get bad tonight.  Scary for a mathdad who lived 16 years in Phoenix before moving to where water falls from the sky, sometimes in feet per day, frozen.

I love you.  I delight in you.  You read so well.  You think so well.  You love well.  I delight in that.
Math-big-girl, you are competitive but need to get better at sportsmanship.  Sometimes you are a sore looser, and a poor-sport.  We will see what can be done there.  Soccer?  Martial arts?  I don't know.

God keep you girlies.

Late November 2017

Math-micro, you found a fossil.  Not just any.  You found one with a marine vertibrate.  It is in the 0.0125% of fossils, one in 8000.

Here is the picture.

Those bones are fish vertebrae, spine-bones.

Those are dis-articulated crinoid fossils.  It is nice, but not a vertebrate.

It is an exceptional good find.

I don't know what to do next.  You will be presenting at your classical conversations class on it tomorrow.

I love you.

Mid-october 2017

I took a bit of a break.  It has been a while.  I miss you.

I'm in school again.  The world is always changing, isn't it.  Yoda says "always in motion is the future" but a big part of that is how the present is always in motion.  The older you get, the faster things seem to change.

Happy October, girlies.  I love you.  I like you.  I delight in you.

So you are becoming big Harry Potter fans.  Reading the books.  Watching the movies.  Watching YouTube theories about whether Malfoy was a werewolf.  youtube.  YouTube.  YOUtube.  youTube.  I'm not sure how they capitalize that.  It is probably an early sign for dementia or Alzheimer's.

When you are old-ish and brilliant, it is the loss of the largest part of identity - the inner self - that is more terrible than the loss of the body with age.  I would rather become a paraplegic than have a stroke.

I want to write you good.  I would say the best vision I have for you, but that praise is not healthy.  Sugar and salt are both deadly.
I feel like that scene from "the Finder" TV show where he talks about trying to see light from the bottom of a deep dark ocean.

I say "those burgers taste like ass".  It is code.  I hope you don't have to experience it.  There is some genetic pre-disposition to decent genius and also to slight end-of-flight instability for women in your heritage going back 4 generations on each side.  May you have all the genius and no more of the crazy than you can stand.

I want to talk about EQ, and maybe we could both study it.

My compute run is over, so I have to get back to work...
I spent time thinking out loud, and maybe I didn't say much.  Did I say something?
